Thanksgiving in Abilene, Texas (Part II)

The happy family eating the Thanksgiving meal. Some are too engrossed to pose for the picture, but not our dear hostess Melanie, who spent the whole day cooking the enormous feast (and that's even with little ones hanging on her legs--pretty amazing!).

To top off our perfect Thanksgiving day, Melanie provided fun crafts-kits for everyone. The boys made an awesome gingerbread house

and the girls made beaded ornament Christmas trees

and Christmas hair flowers.

But sadly, all good things must come to an end.

We can't thank Melanie and Eric enough for letting us invade their house and lives for a few days. We had a great Thanksgiving, and made wonderful memories we will cherish always!

Thanksgiving in Abilene, Texas (Part I)

For Thanksgiving this year we went and visited Melanie's Family in Abilene, TX. Midway through the 18 hour drive he stopped off in Memphis, TN to visit Breck's namesake--Breck Rice (one of Brad's good friends he grew up with in Vanderhoof BC!). Above are the two Brecks'.

This is Breck's beautiful family. We had a wonderful visit with them, and very much appreciated their hospitality and kindness!

Melanie and Eric took good care of us during our visit to Abilene and were the perfect hosts, even with their very active bunch!

Breck and his cousins Jaden and Corbin spent several hours making this cool underground club-house.

Melanie was raving about the clean, fancy interior.

I was amazed at the size of the cactus growing randomly on Melanie's little ranch.

The kids had fun exploring the property

and looking at the animals.

Unfortunately, the boys couldn't go boating or fishing because the ponds were almost dried-up from the drought going on in West Texas.

But they managed to find other forms of entertainment . . .

like attacking each other with cattails (which Breck, my city-slicker, called overgrown corn dogs).

The girls enjoyed swinging on the large swing-set

and what would a ranch be without a tractor

or cockle-burs. Merinda, my other city-slicker, was wondering what insect "jumped" on her jacket and wouldn't let go.

The little ranch did have quite the amenities, however, like a huge deck and hot-tub with surround sound. Here, Aspen is trying to decide if she wants to come and "swim" with Merinda and I.

Aubrey and Breck enjoyed soaking in the hot-tub as well--late at night with the music blaring, and a cup of hot cider!

One of the places we visited while in Abilene was Buffalo Gap. An amazing little town that shows what life was like during the early to mid 1900's.

Everyone had fun trying to balance on the old railroad tracks (there must be something therapeutic about it).

Brad, of course, had to turn the relaxing balancing into a competitive game of chicken.

I don't know what was more fun, the railroad tracks, or the old-fashion school yard. Kids of all ages had fun on the unique merry-go-round.

And there is something nostalgic about teeter-totters that just take you back to your childhood (maybe it's the name). I have never seen so many smiles on so many faces at one time--who knew?!

We actually did go inside most of the buildings, however, I could of stayed all day and listen to every explanation on my hand-held listening device. But that's me--I am a little nerdy that way, and besides, it was the perfect day to soak up some West Texas sun!

Halloween--Band and Choir Style

For Halloween this year the High School Band and Choir got together to put on a spooky Halloween Concert. The only thing spooky to me were some of the costumes (see above)!

I think I could at least take the Director of the choir a little more seriously. Aubrey (standing behind the girl in attractive glasses) has been in both choir and band this year, so concerts like this one makes things a little easier for me.

It was a little difficult to listen to beautiful voices coming from zombie's . . .

and Einstein, and other precarious people, but the concert was very entertaining none-the-less!

Next to perform was the band.

For Halloween this year Merinda was a Stylish Butterfly (if you want to know the official name you will need to look it up in the American Girl Magazine).

Breck and Aubrey (I have no idea what Aubrey is) went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood this year for canned-goods with some friends from their Youth Impact club. They carried the cans in a large rolling suitcase. Aubrey said that when people came to the door and saw a bunch of teenagers "trick-or-treating" and hauling around a suitcase they usually had a look of total disgust on their faces--at least until the kids explained they were collecting non-perishable food items for the Amen House (a local charity).

Fall Happenings

Brad and I ran the Air force Half Marathon again this year, in Dayton, Ohio.

The person we guilted, I mean recruited this year was our good friend Mark Allen.

We had a good time and were just a little worse for ware except for Mark, who left us in the dust! Maybe next year we'll have to find someone a little slower so as to not hurt our delicate egos.

Also, going along with tradition, Brad and I ran in our city's little 5k race for "Festival of the Horse" Days.

It was a cold, tough run. . .

But we both placed. When you become old like us there are fewer contestants, so it is easy to place with only two or three people running in your age division.

Once again we were majorly eating the dust of our friends the Johnsons--Kevin (the dad) came in 2nd, Kaiden came in 7th, and keith (who is 4) was not far behind us.

Aubrey turns 16!

I can't believe that Aubrey is 16. It seems like when one child goes off to college, the others follow in quick succession!

When we asked Aubrey what she wanted for her 16th Birthday she said a party at the park with all of her friends (Aubrey's friend Niamh likes getting her picture taken as much as Brad does).

I think everyone had a good time even though it was last minute, a little cold, and very low-key (in typical Manwaring fashion!)

Aubrey also had a sweet surprise waiting for her when she arrived home one evening. I guess now she can't say, 'sweet sixteen and never been kissed.'

One of Aubrey's friends made this beautiful cake from scratch, for her on her birthday. The same day I took Aubrey out for lunch to any restaurant in Georgetown or Lexington--price was no object! She chose "Chick-Fillet" (did I mention the low-key Manwaring thing, well it's genetic).

The final picture is of Aubrey blowing out her candles, but I had to remove it because I promised Aubrey that I wouldn't post it on the blog. I guess she was having a bad hair day or something. . .

Brittney Goes to College

Before dropping Brittney off at BYU-Idaho, we had to keep her hostage long enough to visit all of mine and Brad's family who live in Utah and Idaho.

Brittney has prepared herself in every way to begin this new chapter in her life, and Brad and I could not be more proud, and happy for her to finally have this opportunity to spread her wings and fly. We love you Brittney!

More Birthday Fun

Merinda turned 10 years old at the beginning of September.

Her only request was some new reading material.

School Time Again

You are never too old to have your picture taken the first day of school!

With the start of school comes football games and the marching band.

Since Breck is a Freshman, this is his first year of marching band. The nice part for me is that he marches only a few feet away from Aubrey, so I can take both of the kid's pictures at one time (Breck is on the far left of the picture playing the Saxophone, and Aubrey is on the far right playing the flute).

Even though school had begun, we had to fit in just one more day at our favorite Kentucky beach!

July Highlights

We Celebrated Brittney's 18th birthday the middle of July. Breck wanted to make her cake this year because he is a big fan of Cake Boss. He was a little disappointed with how the cake turned out (especially after all the time and effort he put into it). He thought it looked more like an airplane bunker than a representation of Brittney flying off to college in Idaho from Kentucky. We thought he did a great job. . .

And besides, it's the taste that really matters anyway and it was delicious!!!

Since it's Brittney's job to mop the floors, we though she would be thrilled to get a new Swiffer Wet-Jet (our old one broke) for her main gift. The funny thing is, she thought we were serious!

She was relieved to find out her real gift was a straitening iron she could take to college (instead of borrowing her sister's).

It was a little bitter-sweet knowing this would be Brittney's last birthday before going off to college.

Also in July we enjoyed visiting our good friends the Wrights in Nashville, on one of Brad's many road-trips down South.

Good food, good friends, and good fun! That's what our summer was all about.

June Happenings

The beginning of June brought another piano recital. This time Aubrey (and Aubrey's little piano student Caitlynn), and Breck performed.

Aubrey is a master sight-reader, and one of my favorite things to do is just sit and listen when she practices at home.

Caitlynn did a wonderful job on her two songs (Aubrey's and Breck's teacher Truett, is the one sitting in the background). Caitlynn is also a great sight-reader and Aubrey's challenge is to find more advanced pieces for such small hands.

Breck is also enjoying his piano lessons especially when making pleasant conversation with Truett, or when trying to impress her.

Finally the kids had a little down time for sunbathing.

This is Breck's manly solution for a wide-rimmed sun bonnet, to keep the sun from burning his face.

Merinda, Breck, and myself went with Brad on one of his business trips to Tupelo, Mississippi. We had a great time swimming and relaxing by the pool. Once again Breck came up with a great solution (not) for keeping the sun off his face. Afraid he would suffocate, I suggested using the waterproof spf 50 we had in our possession. He declined due to the immense effort it would take to apply it to his face (it's good to know he is all man!).

Merinda enjoying the perfect summer scenario with her favorite book, snack, and cool swimming pool (which she enjoyed all to herself) on a hot Mississippi day.

Breck was a little grumpy during our trip and he said it was due to the fact that Merinda "hogged" the whole queen-size bed. I thought Breck was exaggerating until I woke up before the kids one morning and saw Breck literally teetering on the edge of the mattress.

The last main event of June was Breck's fourteenth birthday.

He got some great gifts from his sisters (the cookie monster t-shirt from Brittney, and the snickers candy bars and i-tunes gift card from Merinda).

And we all reaped the benefits of his banana pudding cake, and Blue Bell cookies and cream ice cream!

Aunt Melanie's Visit

We had the rare privilege of having family visit. The opportunity opened up for Melanie and her kids to fly standby from Abilene TX to Lexington KY. She asked if I was ready to have a freight train invade our house. I told her if she was crazy enough to fly standby with four kids ages eight and under, I was crazy enough to entertain her brood for a week.

And what a wonderful week it was!!! Thanks to my good friend Amy Clayburn, who provided the car-seat, play-pen, and stroller, as well as a weeks schedule of fun (and free) things to do around Georgetown!

We all had a blast visiting the Salato Wildlife Reserve in Frankfort KY.

The kids loved looking at all the animals, reptiles, and insects, and playing with the interactive displays, as well as going on a really cool nature hike.

But the thing the kids liked most about Salato Park was chasing their big cousin Breck around, and ganging up on him!

Other fun things we did during the week was visit our friend's horse and llama farm. Rarely did we find Breck anywhere without a baby on his back or 3 little boys attached to his hip. We wouldn't of made it through the week without Breck and Merinda's help!

We all got a kick out of the llama who was trying to give Breck a kiss!

We enjoyed playing at Scott Co. Park because it was such a beautiful day, in fact, the entire week that Melanie was here we had picture-perfect weather!

and feeding/chasing the ducks and geese.

and the boys had fun collecting treasures.

Little Mason found a real egg!

Jaden also found a real egg and feather that he wanted to take home to Texas.

Other fun activities included going to the movies and out for pizza, making totem poles at our county library, watching the kids ride scooters a million miles an hour down the hill, and staying up all hours of the night talking and catching up. At the end of the week we were a little worse for wear, but had a wonderful time together, and are very grateful for the opportunity to do so!

Graduations Continued

After Seminary graduation came Breck's Eighth Grade graduation. I am still quite not sure the reason for an eighth grade graduation, especially when the students here move onto the ninth grade which is in its own building, and technically not a part of high school. Anyway, this pictures show only half of Breck's graduating class.

The Eighth Grade choir and band played. Breck shares a stand with a friend from church, Ashton Barber, the only other member of the church in his grade.

Ashton was also the winner of the Middle School talent show, and played her winning piece for graduation.

Breck then did the typical ceremonial walk with his good friend Samuel, and received his diploma.

Breck then had the privileged of saying the closing prayer at graduation. Breck was in a special leadership class this year and was very much respected by both his teachers and peers, which was evident went they asked a Mormon to say prayer in the predominantly Baptist Bible belt in which we live.

The final graduation was Brittney's High School Graduation. We went to a nice dinner the night before graduation with Grandma Heelis, and Brittney's good friend Daniela and her parents. Brittney and Daniela were the only two Seniors from our church, out of a graduating class of 500 students.

Aubrey dressed up on Brittney's graduation day because the band was an important part of the ceremony (who else was going to play Pomp and Circumstance a million times over for 500 graduating Seniors?).

Because there were so many students and spectators, High School Graduation took place in the Frankfort KY Convention Center.

Brittney sang with the other graduating seniors in the choir. . .

And Aubrey played her flute until her fingers ached.

The rest of us enjoyed the program from the nose-bleed section which explains why my pictures are so fuzzy, and why I was unable to get a picture of Brittney receiving her diploma (the little zoom on my camera is not that strong).

We made up for that by taking lots of pictures after graduation was over.

Everyone had a great time at graduation, and we all had a wonderful week with Grandma Heelis. We are very glad she was able to celebrate this important mile-stone with us!

Graduations

Sadly, it was time to wrap-up another year of Seminary. I had a wonderful class, and am really going to miss seeing them every day during the summer. I am especially going to miss my Seniors next year!

Brittney and Daniela were my two Seminary Graduates. That means they attended a scripture study class for an hour every morning that school was in session, for the last four years!

That's pretty remarkable. But then again, they are pretty incredible girls!!!

We topped-off our Seminary year with a fun picnic at the park with all the Seminary students and their families. Even though it was in the mid-nineties and very humid, we had fun eating pot-luck, challenging the bishopric to a scripture-chase (the kids won), cooling off with a water balloon fight, and just visiting with one another.

Breck found his own entertainment--climbing light poles and trees!

End of Middle School Track

Breck decided he wanted to try-out for the Middle School track team this year (even though he told his parents a few years ago that he hated running, and we could never force him to run again!). But the power of peer-pressure won out, and he tried-out since "all of his friends were on the track team."

Even though he never placed, or made it to State, Breck's coach said he appreciated Breck's hard work, and the good, positive example he was to the rest of the team.

End of Fourth Grade

This year Merinda was a pink talking Lily in her drama's club production of Alice in Wonderland.

Here is a picture of all the flowers who also served as the plays back-up chorus.

Merinda's good friends in her class played the parts of Alice, Twiddle Dee and Tweedledum.

Merinda also participated in gifted & talented drama performance of Billy Goat's Gruff. The kids have little preparation time, and perform without microphones on a small stage surrounded by an audience. This type of setting is a little more intimidating and included individual and small group skits and performances.

Merinda enjoyed the Fourth Grade Career Fair. This is where the students choose what they want to be when they grow up, research that occupation, and then present it to the school and parents in five-minute mini presentations. Merinda chose to be a Pharmacist, and her friend Taylor, a Doctor.

Here one of Merinda's friends is explaining the duties of a Veterinarian.

Merinda also participated in gifted & talented Invention Convention, where the student had to come up with an original invention, investigate its originality and market value, write a proposal, and present the proposal to real professionals. Her invention of "Quick Tips" won her second place.

And finally, I had a fun time going with Meridna on her end-of-year field trip to Frankfort, which is the capital of Kentucky.

We had fun visiting the old Frankfort Capital Building (see above), and Kentucky history museums.

End of High School Chorus

In addition to going to Prom, Brittney made the most of the end of her high school year. She had a blast going on tour with the high school choir to Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Her favorite part of Universal was the Harry Potter theme park.

Her favorite restaurant was Planet Hollywood.

And her favorite thing to do was hang out with friends on Coco Beach.
Her least favorite part was the long bus-ride all night to and from Florida.

It was kind of sad attending Brittney's final choir concert (called the Ice-cream Concert).

This picture is pretty fuzzy, but at least we can see Brittney receiving her 'Senior Flower'.

We all had a fun time reminiscing about choir. But alas, our choir experiences aren't over yet, Aubrey tried-out and will be in Singers just like Brittney.

That means another Ice-cream Concert next year. . .Yay!!!

Prom Night

Brittney got all gussied-up for her Senior Prom. . .The dress: a thirty dollar steal from Marshall's dept. store (maybe Brittney would not like me sharing that info with the world--oh well), the Jewelry: fake diamond necklace and bracelet borrowed from our good friend Bridgette and my earrings from Grandma Heelis, Hair-clip: a black rose made by Brittney's good friend Kate. . .

Shoes: Brittney's regular church shoes embellished with black rose pins that came with her dress (bonus!), Make-up: by Brittney which included cool silver eye-liner, Pedicure: by Brittney herself, and Hair: by me, her mom (who just had a ball going crazy with the hairspray!).

Brittney, and her good friend Daniela (her mom made her dress) went to Prom stag. This was pretty unheard of in my day but I guess girls no longer feel the need to sit and wait for a boy to ask them to their Senior Prom, and then feel totally rejected if not asked, and then spend the rest of their lives telling the story of how they didn't go to their Senior Prom because they never got asked. I also think that guys just don't ask girls out to Prom anymore unless they have a steady girlfriend. At least that's how it seems to be around these parts.

The girls then went up the street to Brittney's good friend Lauren's house, where we (all the parents) took more pictures and sent our girls off (kind of weird them not having dates, but they looked beautiful, and were very excited for the night).

The three girls then went out to eat at Cheddar's in Lexington where they met another friend Karen, and a large group of girls who all went to Prom together. All the girls danced the fast dances together and tried not to watch as the majority of the couples dirty-danced the slow dances. So, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to have all those girls go to their Senior Prom stag. At least they could say they all went, had a wonderful time, and their dignity was still intact by the end of the night!

Camping and Caving continued...

Here we are on the bus ride to Frozen Niagara Cave at Mammoth Cave National Park. It was at the end of our camping trip so we were all a little worse for wear.

The cave was very beautiful, with incredible formations carved and created by nature herself, however, these expensive walking tours did not compare with the great adventure we had exploring the many caves around our own campsite...

Here is a before picture of the "older" kids: Brittney, Breck, Garren Allen, Wesley Holt, Christina Holt, and Aubrey (and myself behind the camera), as we are about to go out on some cave explorations. Brittney decided to opt out since she ruined her only long pair of pants exploring caves the day before.

I was a little skeptical as Garren (notice his hand), and Breck climbed into the entrance of the first cave. Luckily, the opening wasn't too small, however...

the kids failed to inform me of the "slight drop-of" once I was dangling inside!

I am still sporting the scars from that fall, but at least my camera was o.k.(here I am checking out my camera to make sure it didn't break in the fall)--at least I have my priorities straight!

Once inside the cave, it really opened-up, but was still quite dark. I caught the kids off guard as the flash of my camera went off right in front of them.

The kids said there were spiders crawling all over the walls, I thought they were trying to scare me and I told them good thing it was dark so that I couldn't see any. Just for giggles, I took a picture of the cave wall right next to me and this is what I saw as my flash went off (the spiders are way bigger in real-life!).

The other thing we discovered crawling all over the cave wall were cave crickets (left-hand side of the picture). I didn't even know there were such creatures until our tour guide from the Mammoth Cave tour, encouraged us not to look at, or touch the walls of the caves unless we wanted to feel crickets under our fingers. At this point I decided my proximity to a million creepy crawly things was too close, so I hastily exited the cave.

I was informed by the kids that the second cave we would be exploring (above) did not have as many insects inside, however . . .

as you can tell by Wesley's decent, the opening seemed a little tight and sketchy to me.

But as you can see, once inside, there was plenty of room for all of us, and, no creepy crawly things all over the walls...

Only bones! Tons of bones! From animals who fell into this cave, but never got out! I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to get out of this cave alive myself!

Here is a picture I took of Aubrey as she was climbing out. Notice the steepness of the walls, now add to that lots of mud due to the fact that this has been one of the wettest months on record for the state of Kentucky, and you have a recipe for bones, from trapped animals (and possibly people--like me). Luckily, Wesley was behind me, and hoisted me up and out of the cave!

Here was yet another cave Wesley decided to investigate for us. We watched and waited to see if he would come out alive...

Fortunately he did, but said the cave was underwhelming (probably not enough mud, drop-offs, creepy things, or bones), so we decided to take a little break from our explorations.

Here is the after picture of our caving adventures. I took this picture to show how dirty and treacherous our caving experience was, and how brave we all were. Who needs expensive, over-commercialized caving tours when we can find them ourselves! I know it was an experience I will never forget!!!

The "younger" kids felt left-out and wanted to explore the same caves. I then showed them the entrances, and explained that there were spiders, crickets, and bones in the caves. They decided to find some different "caves" to explore that weren't so dark and "scary". I informed them that that was a very wise choice!

Here is one of those caves. They had a great time climbing through the rocks, and getting sufficiently dirty themselves. All in all, the caving experience was a fun one for everyone, and the perfect ending to a great Spring Break!

Camping at Cave City

The day after Brad and I returned from our whirlwind trip to New York, we went with some friends camping to Mammoth Cave for the second half of Spring Break.

The idea was to camp at a "secluded" spot where the scouts had camped the year before, not realizing that the owners had since put in a Zip-Line, provided Horse-back riding tours, Camping, Corn-hole etc. etc. At least we had water (a hose by the horses), and bathroom (one over-full porta-potty servicing all zip-liners, riders, and campers!

We all made the most out of our camping arrangements however, and enjoyed comfortable seating around the campfire,

and making good use of the camp-site owners' trailer!

We ate like kings and queens thanks to our great cooks (Brad, Mark, and Rex) who made gourmet breakfasts, wonderful barbecues, and a dutch-oven dinner which included dutch-oven cobbler (strawberry, cherry, blueberry, and apple) for dessert!

We had fun at night visiting around the camp fire, reading ghost stories, roasting marsh-mellows, and eating smores. Above, Brittney is getting a kick out of Merinda who just sat on a very sticky marsh mellow stick--one of the many things that can happen while roasting marsh-mellows, in the dark, with lots of kids, and sticky sticks lying around.

No camping experience would be complete without an intense game of Capture-The-Flag, in the pitch dark, late at night. Rex is explaining the rules and showing everyone the "flags" (glow-sticks).

Speaking of night, the other great thing about our campsite was its proximity to a large pond where tons of frogs and toads lived. It was an experience walking to the porta-potty in the middle of the night while the ground moved under your feet, and then hopped right out from under you!

It is good to eat, enjoy each other's company, and share funny stories together around the "dinner table."

Because we were not quite dirty, sweaty, or smelly enough, we just had to play one more game of Frisbee Football before driving the two and a half hours home.

New York City

For our 20th Wedding Anniversary Brad and I spent five days and four nights in Manhattan, NYC! My personal photographer, Brad, took this great picture in front of the Statue of Liberty.

Here we are on Liberty Island with a view of the mainland behind us. After taking a million pictures (we chose not to wait in a long line at the crack-of-dawn to get tickets to the museum and base), we went to Ellis Island, which I found very fascinating, and became one of my favorite places we visited during our stay.

Here, I am standing on the Staten Island Pier; behind me is the Financial District of Manhattan. One of the buildings on the left is where we stayed our fist two nights in NYC thanks to our friends' Jason and Brianna Griffiths. The building on my left is the National Museum of the American Indian.

Brad is posing (one of the few times I could get him to cooperate) by a touching statue of American Immigrants in Battery Park.

Here I am riding the "Charging Bull" statue at the New York Stock Exchange. (Brad's idea--I am glad that I am a better sport than he is when it comes to posing for pictures!). Other sites we visited in this area were "Ground Zero", City Hall Park, Woolworth Building, and Trinity Church.

For this picture I got lucky, and snapped the picture just as Brad turned around. I couldn't figure out why Brad was getting so upset with me for taking pictures until after we returned home and realizing that I had taken 450 pictures over the course of our trip! We strolled along the Brooklyn Bridge, because that is what our NYC Frommer book suggested we do.

Here I am posing again on top of the Empire State Building. It really was an incredible site! We truly experienced NYC as we walked from the Financial District to the Empire State Building while passing through Greenwich Village, Washington and Union Square Parks, and Madison Square Garden.

Here we are returning from a beautiful carriage ride through Central Park. Even though it was terribly overpriced, it was something that both Brad and I have always wanted to do. We also got a hot dog, and warm honey roasted peanuts for memory sake.

At the Rose Center for Earth & Space we watched a star show in the Hayden Planetarium, and because I loved "Night at the Museum" so much, we just had to go to see all the sites at the American Museum of Natural History (I think the movie made it a little more exciting than it actually was). However, my favorite place in all of Manhattan was The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I could of stayed there for weeks, and still not experience everything I wanted to!

This is one of several billboards with Brad's name on them. They were so great, I just had to take a picture. I told Brad that the couple was a striking resemblance to us (not really)! When we finally got tired of walking we took the Subway. The highlight of the Subway: Grand Central Terminal, with its amazing architecture, marbled floors, huge chandeliers, and breathtaking sky-ceiling! And did I mention that the food there was really good too?

Here I am at Rockefeller Plaza with a view of the Empire State Building behind me. Even though it's not as high as the Empire State Building (70-stories compared to 103 stories), the views are still amazing, with a better look of Central Park. Other sites at "30 Rock" included the famous Ice Rink, and NBC Studios. We stayed at Midtown Manhattan for our other two nights and appreciated the convenience to window shopping on Fifth Avenue and other intriguing sites such as Trump Tower, the NYC Public Library, Chrysler Building, Radio City Music Hall, and St. Patrick's Cathedral.

And of course, you couldn't go to Manhattan without experiencing Time Square. We walked through it at night and saw filming of a new TV series, as well as screaming Harry Potter fans waiting for some kind of movie-star about to walk the red carpet (we did't stick around long enough to find out who). Speaking of Harry Potter, we also had the opportunity to see a Broadway Musical--How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at the Hirschfeld Theatre. The cast included Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), John Larroquette (his Broadway debut), and Anderson Cooper's voice (he was the narrator). We loved it! Who knew that "Harry Potter" could dance and sing so well? The show quickly became Brad's favorite thing to see or do in NYC.

We had a wonderful time in NYC, and I couldn't think of a more entertaining thing to do for our Anniversary! Thank You Brad for providing such a wonderful experience--I love you, and look forward to another wonderful 20 years together!!!

Randomness. . .

The thing that came to my mind as I viewed my pictures at the start of 2011 is the randomness (I know this is probably not a word) of the pictures and subject matter. Now, I have seen this kind of picture before a big concert or game, but never in my life have I seen people camping out for the opening of a restaurant, and a fast food restaurant at that! First of all, I say to myself, "only in Kentucky" and then I think, "what has this world come to?"

Brittney and her friend Kate might not appreciate this picture being placed here for everyone to see since this was their "secret agent disguise" when they delivered goodies undercover to several families at church. I hope I haven't blown their cover too much, it's just such a great picture to go along with such a great random act of kindness.

Aubrey threw a surprise party for one of her friends and made these little cow cupcakes, her other friend said she would provide the pasture which, as you can see, included a wooden box covered in red construction paper representing the barn, and cotton balls taped to green page protectors representing bails of hay and grass--totally random, but so cute!

Several years ago this might have been a random sight, but not for the last few years--beautiful roses from my husband on Valentine's Day (I love my husband!!!).

O.K. Merinda getting fifth place on the Language Arts written test at the District Academic Team competition is not so random (her team came in second place), but I needed to get this picture on the blog anyway--way to go Merinda, we're proud of you!

Here, Merinda is looking at her scrap book with Grandpa's new wife, Virginia. The random (and beautiful) part: having a new Grandmother, two new Aunts, and five new Cousins, all sealed to us! (I think Grandpa needs a bigger couch to nap on!).

We all LOVE Virginia, and had a wonderful time getting to know her better!!!

The New Year

Over Christmas break we enjoyed doing some fun things as a family. We went to the movies and saw Tangled, and even got popcorn and drinks, which was a real treat since it costs over fifty dollars for our family to go to the movies, and that's before concessions! The other fun thing we did is go skiing (all of us except for Merinda). The picture above is a really far away picture of the closest ski resort to us, "Perfect North", which is in Indiana (about an hour's drive).

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me, so I am posting what few pictures Aubrey took with her new camera. Since it was the first time skiing for most of us (Brad's second), I didn't want Aubrey taking her new camera on the slopes. I think that was a good idea since every time I saw Aubrey she was on the ground trying to get up (she did much better once she got on the slopes, it was just standing in place that seemed to be the most difficult for her). Here is a before picture of Brittney who is all ready to go.

Here is the after picture of Brittney. She looks a little more serious, or maybe that's the look of pure exhaustion and bone-chilling cold. Christina, the girls friend, also looks a bit worn-out.

We went skiing with several families from the ward in order to get the group discount. Skiing is almost as expensive as going to the movies! Here we all are getting into our skiing gear, or at least here are all the guys putting on their gear. Good thing Aubrey has her priorities straight when it comes to taking pictures!

Here is the whole gang enjoying an authentic Mexican feast, just outside of Cincinnati. The warmth and food never felt or tasted so good!

For New Year's Eve we had a great time bowling with friends at Cosmic Bowling alley (the lights go off in the evening and everything, including the balls, are glow-in-the-dark). Here is our friend Mark Allen getting ready to bowl a strike (incidently, Mark and Bridgette's team won our friendly competition due to their amazing bowling skills).

We had a fun time the rest of the night just visiting, playing games, and snacking on good food.

Brittney made two dessert pizzas for the occasion, which were almost too pretty to eat (so I had to take a picture). And they were oh so yummy! We rang in the new year with a toast of sparkling cider and a game of charades (guys against girls). Surprisingly, the guys held their own and even almost won. It was entertainment at its finest and the perfect way to start off the new year. We want to thank everyone who came and celebrated with us - it was a lot of fun!

Christmas 2010

I Christmas began with our traditional Christmas Eve candle-light dinner, and reading/singing of the Christmas Story.

Christmas morning we took the traditional picture top of the stairs, only this year there are a few more smiles since it was 9:00 am instead of 6:00 am!

Merinda enjoyed all her gifts which she meticulously placed for the picture.

Breck was thrilled about his purple tie. . .

But definitely his favorite gift was his new I-Touch (of which he already earned half the money for). But I guess seeing is believing.

Brittney too was pretty happy about her new I-Touch. I don't know what got into Santa this year, but I do think all the strings that are (and will be) attached to those i-touches might subdue some of the kid's giddiness, and make Santa feel a little better.

Aubrey just enjoyed taking pictures of herself and her friends with her new camera!

My favorite part of Christmas. . .not working a 12 hour shift on Christmas day (like last year). And just relaxing with nowhere to go in the cold and snow, or nothing pressing to do!

More Holiday Fun. . .

The last concert of the year was Merinda's Performing Morgan concert which almost didn't happen due to snow. All of Georgetown shuts down when it snows so the kids got an extra week of Christmas break this year!

Merinda was part of the exclusive Angel Choir (which did sound beautiful, I have to admit). The only tricky part was coming up with a halo at the last minuet. I always thought halo's were supposed to float above the head (and in Merind's case, way above the head!). At least these angels didn't require wings!

In addition to playing instruments and singing, the Performing Morgans also danced. All of this occurred over a period of about twenty minuets - it was the perfect kind of performance!

There is a house down the road from our church building that is plastered with Christmas lights.

This year I made Brad stop so the kids could get a better look, and I could take some cool pictures. Little did I know that the lights were also synchronized to Christmas music which played continuously.

Brad thought it was all a bit too much and it stressed him out to think about the power bill, or to imagine he was one of the neighbors who had to listen to the music 24/7 and witness the steady stream of spectators.

I just enjoyed taking it all in, and appreciated the fact that the kids had just as much fun looking at the lights of this one house as they would have viewing the Horse Park light show (which has about the same number of lights but costs a ton of money). So thank you overdone Christmas lights house for the free light show!

We topped off our Christmas celebrations with a plate full of homemade goodies the kids baked and delivered to friends and neighbors. The treat that didn't make the picture were the kid's hand-dipped white and chocolate pretzels, about a million of them!

December Happenings

There is one thing I really enjoy about December, and that is going to all of the kid's Christmas concerts and recitals. Here is Brittney's chorus concert which is so big they hold it in a large concert hall (where the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra performs) in downtown Lexington. The down side to this location--there is no parking, and you never know when you are going to be ticketed!

This is the best picture I could get of Brittney (the only one with glasses). I think her eyes are open, but that's o.k. because it seems that half of the girl's eyes are closed.

Aubrey's Christmas band concert was held at the High School, but the band is so large they have two separate concerts. The conductor, Mr. Bronner, threatens to retire every year. It is increasingly difficult for him to get around due to bad knees (thus the handrail on his stand). For the first time in fifty years or so, the Concert band was chosen as an elite band to represent Kentucky in Chicago, at the Midwestern band competition and symposium. I have to admit that the band did sound pretty amazing! And just maybe, this will be Mr. Bronner's ticket to retirement.

Finally she turned around, quickly (notice how fuzzy), only after I called out her name several times (she rarely claims me as her mother any more). Breck also had a Christmas concert, but parents are allowed to take pictures only before the start of the concert. Since he is in 8th grade, and too cool for pictures, I decided to save him the embarrassment this year.

Another highlight of December--Brad's birthday. This pictures is history in the making--not only did I have the right candle number, I actually was able to find two of that number. So 44 is on the cake, and 44 is Brad's true age this year!

I make Brad's favorite birthday cake every year (German Chocolate with coconut pecan icing). Only this time Brad commented on the fact that his cake tasted better, and was more moist than it had ever been (I guess I should have Merinda make it every year!). Merinda also wanted to take our picture with my camera.That is not the only thing Merinda enjoys using. I get a little suspicious when I start receiving text messages from her friends!

We were all a little silly that night, I don't know if it was the really good cake, or the candy cane ice cream!

Novmber Happenings

Brad recently went to Japan, and was able to show his boss the sites on the weekend. He was hoping that it would be a nice day, and that they would have a clear view of Mt. Fuji, but this is the best picture he got--maybe next time!

I frequently say to my kids, "once in a blue moon." Well, it just so happens that last month there was a blue moon. Breck didn't believe me when I said that the moon doesn't really turn blue, so he took this picture out his bedroom window. Unfortunately, there were too many clouds to see if I was right or not.

We had a nice quiet Thanksgiving this year with our traditional nontraditional feast. At first glance you see all the appropriate foods, but look closer at our meat...

It's BBQ Beef Brisket (and boy was it good!!!). We bid, and won a smoked meat of choice from our ward auction. We had our pick of smoked turkey or beef brisket. After much contemplation, we decided not to break tradition, and go with the beef brisket (we were not disappointed!). Claude Christensen, painstakingly smoked this the day before Thanksgiving, and gave us the meat, drippings, and his own secret BBQ sauce with a page worth of instructions (this was his baby that he had smoked to perfection). Needless to say, Brad's next investment--a smoker!

The other highlight of Thanksgiving was the girls' and my homemade apple crisp, pumpkin, coconut cream, and pecan (Brad's favorite) pies! And we cannot forget, luscious pumpkin cheesecake, compliments of the Allens!!!

The Thanksgiving holiday was truly complete with a rare visit from family. My little brother Matt was doing business in Louisville so we kidnapped him for an evening. It was so good to visit and catch up with him, hopefully next time he can stay a little longer!

Halloween 2010

Every year we enjoy going to our church's "Trunk-Or-Treat", and chili cook-off. Since we did not have an actual costume contest this year, I decided to post some of my favorite pictures, and tell you what Awards I would of handed out:

Kate and Brittney as "Most Imaginative" costumes. Just try to imagine that Harry Potter has turned into a beautiful ladybug.

Merinda and Lauren as "Oddest Pair Standing Next to Each Other" costumes. It almost hurts my brain to look at a pioneer girl standing next to a one-eyed, one-horned, flying-purple-people-eater (which Lauren and her mom made themselves--way to go!).

Most "Normal Family Costumes" costume. What a handsome bunch!

McKenzie and Rebekah modeling "The Most Beautiful" costumes. But wait, I don't think these two really are dressed up. They look this beautiful everyday!

The "Most Creative" costumes. It takes no imagination to see how creative Jessica was for completely creating, and making hers' (and Ariels') costumes from scratch. I am still amazed!

Monster Truck Jam

I have always wanted to go to a Monster Truck Rally and a couple of weeks ago Brad took me on a "surprise" date. I thought the surprise was a haunted house or something similar, since it was close to Halloween. But not until we arrived at Freedom Hall in downtown Louisville (and everyone was wearing earplugs), did I clue in to the fact that I was checking off another event on my "bucket list".

The main trucks that competed in the various events (wheelie, speed, donuts, and freestyle) were named: Backdraft (first picture), Mutant Ninja Turtle (which really looked like one), Stone-Crusher, Blue-Thunder, Grave-Digger, and Superman (above). Superman was my favorite because that big truck really could fly! While doing the wheelie competition, its wheelie was so big that it almost fell backwards and crushed the top in. The only thing that saved it from utter destruction was its huge cape (made of fiberglass) that lodged between the small cars, causing the truck to roll back onto its wheels. Unfortunately, everything after that amazing stunt was a little anti-climatic.

Gave-Digger was my second favorite truck. We don't have a picture of Grave-Digger because I didn't have my camera with me. All of these pictures came from Brad's cell-phone. He did however, record an awesome video of Grave-Digger, but was unable to download it to my computer. So imagine a really loud tuck (the loudest one there), that really looked like it came from the grave. It was not pretty. The cab looked like it was practically falling off of the chasse (sp?) so it wobbled and bounced as it moved. But it was fast, and did incredible stunts. It just goes to show, you can't judge a book by its cover. The truck in the picture above was Stone-Crusher, which I think had the best detailed paint job.

This final truck is Blue-Thunder. It was a little more compact, and as you can see, defied a little bit of gravity itself. I liked Blue-Thunder because it was painted such a pretty light and teal-blue color. Is it o.k. to call a Monster Truck pretty? Anyway, the point is, you can enjoy the smell of diesel and burning rubber, the consuming noise of a powerful engine in full throttle, and the site of crushing glass and metal, and still be in touch with your feminine side. I loved it! And just want to thank my dear husband for the great experience!

Kirtland, Ohio

We were thrilled to have mom come and visit the first week in October for the kid's Fall Break.

Because Brad loves to drive so much, we decided to take mom to Kirtland, Ohio,

to see the church history sites.

Even though it was drizzling, and the weather was a little chilly, the air was so fresh and crisp, with a picturesque backdrop of green foliage, and radiant fall colors just beginning to show.

Since my kids were tired of posing for me, mom was a good sport and let me photograph her in front of the beautiful landscape. Because of a mini-drought Kentucky has been experiencing the last several months, I almost forgot that green, instead of brown, is the real color of grass, as well as most trees and shrubbery.

In Seminary this year, we are learning about church history and it was fun for the kids to visit the Newel K. Whitney store in person, and see how it looked in the early 1800's.

I always find the Sawmill and Ashery to be two of my most favorite parts of historic Kirtland.

Last but not least was the Kirtland Temple. As you can see it was under restoration at the front of the building, but luckily we were still able to take a tour inside.

Even though we have visited Kirtland quite frequently in the last few years, this visit was our favorite for three reasons: 1) Because my mom was able to come with us. 2) Because the Community of Christ has done such a great job updating the Temple's visitor center. And 3) Because our tour guide was extremely gracious in spending so much time with us, and in explaining every detail of the Temple (we even got sit and talk in the top level, something we have never done), as well as interesting facts about church history we had not heard before. On the way home we ate at a great local restaurant without realizing is was "free slice of pie night." The succulent pie was just the cherry on top of a fabulous trip! We want to thank mom for taking time out of her busy schedule to come and visit--Thanks Mom!

Horsey 5K

Since Brad sprained his ankle a few weeks ago, at the last minute I had to recruit a new partner to run our town's 5K with me.

Even though Breck didn't really have an opportunity to train, he still got third place out of his age-division. Way to go Breck, we are proud of you!

We had fun running the race with other families from church like the Barbers who metaled in every race,

and Kevin Johnson who took first place overall, way to go Kevin!

That same weekend we enjoyed visiting with friends after watching General Conference.

Merinda's Field Trip

Merinda's first field trip of the year was to Fort Boonesborough, located in North-Eastern KY. Fort Boonesborough has been reconstructed as a working fort complete with cabins, blockhouses, and all the furnishings. Resident artisans perform craft demonstrations and give modern-day visitors a true sense of what life was like for pioneers in Kentucky.

The Fort is a fun place to visit because it is truly like stepping back into time. Here, Merinda is looking at dolls, and playing with wooden toys that were popular in the late 1700's.

Merinda also learned about dipping candles, old-time medicine and herbs, things that are made at a blacksmith's shop, how thread was spun from cotton or wool using a spinning wheel, and how looms were used in weaving rugs and clothing.

But the highlight was a reenactment of the battle at Fort Boonesborough. Fort Boonesborough is now a State Park but many years ago Daniel Boone and his men reached the Kentucky River April 1, 1775, hoping to establish Kentucky's second settlement.

In the autumn of 1778 a large force of Indians attacked and laid siege to Boonesborough. For nine days and nights the Indians surrounded the fort.

The defenders held out and the Indians abandoned the siege. Soon Boonesborough became a center of pioneer life on the Kentucky frontier.

Air Force Marathon

This past weekend we ran the Air Force half marathon in Dayton, Ohio. This was our second year running the race but this time we recruited Brad's brother Blake (this would be Blake's first half marathon), and his wife Josie.

Unlike last year, we were relieved to walk to the start line (instead of sprint), and thankful to be able to use the porta-potty before the race instead of in the middle of it.

I am glad I brought my camera before the race so that we could get some "happy" shots as a reminder that running half marathons are fun!

After the race, we were a little worse for wear (especially taking into account Blake's hip injury, and Josie's bad head-cold), but still willing to smile for picture sake. . .

But one post-race picture is enough!

I was then forced to take pictures of other poor unsuspecting runners. My favorite was this gentleman who epitomized how we all felt, however, he was lucky enough to find the only post-race shade in existence, under this large transport airplane (a sight you will never see at any other marathon!).

That evening, Brad made us all model our race t-shirts just so he had proof that he "ran the race, got the t-shirt, and can mark it off the list!"

The kids had a great time visiting with their Aunt and Uncle. . .

but were really sad when they had to say goodbye Sunday morning. Brittney commented, "Why can't we live closer to family?" I had no answer - I often wish for that too, especially when we all have such a good time when we're together (in sickness or health; craziness or saneness). Hopefully, someday . . .

Fall Happenings

We spent a wonderful weekend with the Wright family (Deb, Les, Jared, and Tyler), who came up to visit us Labor Day weekend. The highlight: a BBQ at Kincaid Lake, in Central KY.

The kids had fun throwing rocks and logs into the lake (something you never grow out of).

Brittney trying to keep from getting hypothermia, after all, its was in the upper sixties! (In her defense, we were all a little chilly since our bodies had been used to upper nineties, which was pretty much the temperature ALL SUMMER LONG!)

Fall would not be Fall without Football! However, instead of watching the team play, we go to watch the Band play!

And more particularly, Aubrey, who plays the flute in the marching and concert bands.

On this night, however, it was Eighth Grade Night. The eighth-graders were invited to play (but not march) with the High School band. Here is a picture of Breck and Ashton (a friend from church), playing their saxophones.

Every time I tried to take Breck's picture, he would look away or put his instrument in front of his face.

I asked Breck if he had fun playing at a High School game for the first time. He said, "No, it was really boring." . . .the zoom on my camera says otherwise!

The other reason I love Fall so much - Seminary (early morning scripture-study class). This represents about 3/4 of my class. In case you couldn't tell, we meet in a science class at the High School. I love my students - they're the best!

Kid's Birthdays. . .

Next in line was Brittney who turned 17 this year. She too enjoyed her non-traditional cake of pistachio pudding dessert.

Merinda's birthday comes next, around Labor Day weekend. She turned 9 years old! Her obsession: the latest Percy Jackson books. Favorite gift: her cousin Rachelle's hand-me-downs (from Justice no less!).

Merinda wanted a more traditional cake with just a simple request that it's theme be Percy Jackson and the Olympians! She didn't seem to mind too much that Percy wore camouflage with a beret, or that Annabeth had black hair and glasses. Ms. Dodds, Hades, and Minotaur were closer to their true selves, but I made name tags for all the characters just in case.

Last but not least was Aubrey's 15th birthday. She didn't request any particular cake, so I made her a funfetti, silly-band cake (with real silly-bands).

Fishing in the Canadian Wilderness

Grandpa Manwaring, Brad, and Breck had a wonderful time staying and spending time with the Gulbransons', celebrating the 24th of July (which Breck has never done before) with old friends, visiting at church, and going on a three-day fishing exertion. All of this took place approx. ten hours north of Vancouver, Canada, in Vanderhoof, British Columbia (where Brad grew up).

For the most part, the fishing part of the trip was a big success, with the guys catching their daily limit (well, almost) of Rainbow Trout.

Breck was thrilled to learn how to put (and keep) a worm on a hook, and gut a fish (the expression on his face says it all).

Everything was going great until I get a phone call at home, with very poor reception, from Brad who said they had taken a wrong turn and were lost, with the truck high-centered in a mud pit.

I called the entire Manwaring family trying to get a hold of someone, while the guys spent three hours trying to dig themselves out.

Brad and Breck then walked six miles to the main road in order to hopefully be rescued (which they were - Thankfully).

After the whole ordeal was over, and with nighttime quickly approaching, Grandpa Manwaring had just a few words to say. . ."Now let's go fishing!"

(Again, I think Breck's expression says it all!)

The last few days of their trip, Brad, Breck, and Grandpa, drove through Ferndale, Washington (where Brad lived as a teenager), Bellingham, Washington (where Brad & I lived and Brittney was born), and drove on beautiful Chuckanut Drive (sp?) along the Washington coast, before spending a day in Seattle (In this picture Breck is viewing the city from top of the Space Needle).

On the way to and from Canada, Brad and Breck had the opportunity to visit with family and friends. Aunt Vicki took good care of everyone while at their home in Olympia, Washington, and while spending time in the Seattle area. Breck enjoyed shopping, going to the movies, and getting to know his cousins Dallin, Alyssa, and Blakely (who was visiting from Idaho) a little better.

Camping in Tennessee

We were finally able to go camping this year as a family at Big South Fork river and recreation area, in the Cumberland Plateau, located in the western Appalachian Mountains. We chose this location because it was fairly close to home, hopefully cooler due to it's elevation, and contained hundreds of hiking trails. Here, Breck is getting to know some of the local creatures, however, the most prevalent animal to watch for was the black bear!

This is where the phrase "Happy Camper" comes from.

O.k. this is a little better!

Even though the camping and hiking were extremely hot (in the nineties with ninety percent humidity), the scenery was breathtaking, and worth the heat.

Sister's Reunion Part Two

While in Heber, we though it would be fun to surprise Jared at work. He gave us the grand tour as we enjoyed the opportunity of meeting some of the great people he works with.

No reunion would be complete without taking family names to the Temple.

Next on the schedule was dinner at Taco Amigo and family get-to-gather at PG park, for old time sake.

Even though it began as a Sister's Reunion, what a treat it was to have the whole gang back together again, and not forgetting Dad as we paid our respects.

I had so much fun, and hope we can fulfill Mom's dream of making this reunion an annual event. Thanks Mom for putting this together, for everyone who sacrificed their time and money to make it happen, and to Melanie, for putting up with me and my camera despite being over seven months pregnant!

Sister's Reunion Part One

This past week I spent a wonderful five days in Utah for our very first Sister's Reunion. Cindy flew from Grangeville Idaho, Melanie drove from Abalien Texas, and I flew from Georgetown, KY. The "Sisters" that were able to participate included (from left to right) Brie, Sasha, Mom, Cindy, Carolee, Melanie, and Me (Alicent).

We had a fun time eating good food, like raspberry-filled donuts (not available in the South or Midwest), and getting our hair done (notice my hair before, in the first picture, and after, in this picture) compliments of Mom and her salon.

Other highlights were a day of pampering with manicures and pedicures ...

and spending a night at a cabin up Heber canyon among the beautiful Pines and Quaking Aspens, which included a fabulous dinner with chocolate lava cake for dessert (again all compliments of Mom).

We had a good time taking a break from our busy lives to catch up, take personality tests, share goals, and just enjoy each others' company.

I had a fun time going with Merinda on her field trip to the Kentucky Horse Park. This Fall, the Horse Park will host the 2010 World Equestrian Games, right here in our little town of Georgetown, KY. Many people are still trying to find places to stay and are paying a going rate of $1000.00/day (I am seriously thinking about giving up my house for three weeks!).

No, I did not really turn nineteen, even though I feel that young! I forgot to buy a number "3" candle, so this year I had the privilege of being 19 again instead of 39 years old (I will definitely need to forget the number "4" for next year!).

I had a wonderful Birthday & Mother's Day despite the fact they took place in the middle of a very hectic month of May. I enjoyed the calls, gifts, spending time with family & friends, and watching Iron Man opening night!

With the end of May came the end of Seminary. I will miss my Seniors Shay and Sean, but can't wait to see everyone back next fall, including 18 new students!

My Seminary class again, only this time they are revealing their true colors (and yes, I am also showing the real me).

North Carolina Vacation

We had a wonderful family vacation in "Outer Banks" (or OBX) North Carolina despite the twelve-hour drive with a broken air conditioner!

We had a great time visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Century of Flight Monument in Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills (named after foul tasting rum "that would kill the devil" which washed ashore after shipwrecks). Other fun sites we visited close by were Jockey's Ridge State Park, a 426-acre park, and site of the largest natural living sand dune on the East Coast, located in Nags Head (tying lantern to a horses head or nag, and luring ships to shore for plundering).
We visited three lighthouses and museums which included Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke Island lighthouses. This is the view from the top of Cape Hatteras lighthouse, the single person on the ground in green is my mother, who joined us on the trip.

This is Bodie Island lighthouse in Buxton, located close to our beach-house in Avon, which was apart of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area, and one of the best places to look for seashells.
Everyone had fun "body surfing" and "boogie boarding" in the big waves. This beautiful, natural, mostly secluded beach, with the finest white sand, was 1,000 feet from the beach house we rented for ten days. A little over 1,000 feet in the other direction from our house was the "sound" side of the island with huge waves which brought wind-surfers and kite-borders from all over the world.
Other highlights of the trip were visits to fabulous museums, Ocracoke Ferry and Island, national wildlife refuges, island marshes, boating/fishing piers, and sea-life art galleries. Cherished moments included relaxing in the hot tub, reading on the deck's hammock, collecting seashells, watching the Sandpipers (cute little birds) play "chicken" with the waves, walking the beaches at night and viewing the lighthous' spotlights, and watching the sunset on the ocean's horizon.

Graduation Gifts & Nursing Pinning

After my surprise graduation party, we opened gifts and cards--I want to thank everyone who sent and gave cards, and for all of the thoughtful gifts!

This is the card I received from my family, and it really does summarize how I feel about starting a real job!

Next, we celebrated our own version of the "Nursing Pinning Ceremony" since I was unable to attend mine. I was again surprised by my amazing husband who presented me with two Nurses Pins. . . in the form of Diamond Earrings!!!

The girls got to do the honors--Brittney, Aubrey, and Merinda each assisted with the "Pinning."

I graduated with my Bachelors of Nursing Degree from BYU-Idaho twenty years after I first began college. I have tried to stress the importance of finishing college before being a mother, because being on the twenty-year plan just too difficult (even with all of my family's incredible support). However, after the surprise party, special "nurses pinning", and vacation to North Carolina, it ended better than I could of ever imagined!

Surprise Graduation Party

Brad threw me a surprise graduation party at the park. I was so clueless, that even after everyone yelled. . . . . . "surprise" I still didn't know it was for me. Finally Merinda had to say, "Mom, this party is for you because you graduated, silly!" I have been pretty dense before, but this one takes the cake!

It was a wonderful party with all of my good friends such as the Bishop and his wife...

Longtime friends, and dear friends from Church (The Thunhorst who sadly are moving, and Clayburns who were also in our same ward in Saint Louis), and my running partner and her husband.

And the best neighbors anyone could ask for, like the Masons and Durbins (Ursala left, conspired with my daughters, and was responsible for the decorations and helping Brad bring everything together).

I can not thank my husband and children enough for all of their support and the many sacrifices they made during the past three years. I also want to thank my wonderful husband for acknowledging my graduation, and for truly making this all come to pass, for without his help and support I would never had made it--Thank you Brad, I love you!!!

I had a fabulous mother's day and birthday! I want to thank everyone who sang, sent cards and gifts, and remembered me on my birthday. Here I am getting ready to eat my favorite cake--carrot cake from "Granny's Goodies."

This past weekend I had a wonderful time going to "Time Out for Women" in Cincinnati with eleven other ladies from the ward.

The three musketeers! It was fun to spend time with dear friends again. We have missed talking and doing things together since the three of us are so busy going to school, working, and raising children.

It is still fun to have slumber parties, eat junk food, and stay up all night. Unfortunately, it takes a little longer to recuperate from the lack of sleep and sugar high as our husbands and kids will attest too.

Every year the grade school offers after-school clubs for the kids, and Merinda decided to join the "Fun and Games Club" and "Drama Club." This year's drama club production was "The Wizard of Oz."

These are the munchkins--literally, this play included only first and second graders.

Merinda was the "green narrator" and at one point considered dropping out because her lines were "too hard to memorize!"

We are glad she hung tough...and glad the directors had patience of saints.

We all got caught up in the spirit of the play, and let our "true colors" show--who are these crazy people anyway?

Alicent's Spring Break

For Ali's Spring Break we ditched the kids and went for a short get away to Asheville, North Carolina where we visited Biltmore Estate. Biltmore was the summer home of the Vanderbilts and was erected in 1895. This is still the largest home in North America.

The tulips were full bloom, we enjoyed every breathtaking garden with foliage of all kinds and unbelievable colors.

The grounds were designed by the same architect/landscaper who created Central Park in New York City.

Time seemed to stand still as we walked and viewed the many scenic ponds, bridges, and waterfalls.

The Biltmore Gardens contained numerous large greenhouses with every type of exotic plant imaginable. We had a wonderful two days in paradise!

Ali and I went to Bloomington, Indiana to run a half marathon. This is us at the starting line on a frigid 36 degree morning (7:30 am).

Look at that enthusiasm waiting for the starting gun!

2 hours, 16 minutes, and 35 seconds later (10:25 pace) we are victorious!

We received several inches of snow and ice that paralyzed Kentucky for over a week. The ice created power outages throughout Kentucky.
